Discover Terroir

Located in the eastern part of the Aegean Sea, Ikaria is part of the Aegean Islands region of Greece. The island's rugged terrain is characterized by rolling hills and mountains that descend dramatically to the sea, providing the vineyards with diverse microclimates and sun exposure. The proximity to the Aegean Sea influences the region's climate and contributes to the unique terroir.

The Ikaria wine region experiences a Mediterranean climate, and receives maritime influences. For this reason summers are typically hot and dry, with plenty of sunlight to foster grape ripening, while rainfall is concentrated in winter. The cooling breezes from the Aegean Sea are key to moderate the island's temperatures, especially in summer, creating favorable conditions for the vineyards.

Ikaria has diverse soil composition, providing a rich foundation for viticulture. The most predominant soils are volcanic, which are mineral-rich and well-draining. The volcanic soils lend unique mineral and earthy notes to the wines. Despite this, in certain areas, there are limestone and schist soils, that add further complexity to the terroir, allowing for major diversity in wine production.

Ikaria, an island in the Aegean Sea known for its unique wine heritage, produces a variety of red and white wines that capture the essence of the region's terroir.

The most common red Ikerian wine is a bold and robust red known as "Pramnios." Crafted predominantly from the local red grape variety "Fokiano," Pramnios exhibits deep, rich flavors of dark berries, plum, and hints of Mediterranean herbs, as well as a bright ruby color. This wine boasts a distinctive earthy character, thanks to the volcanic soil and coastal influence, contributing to its complexity and age-worthiness.

On the other hand, the most prevalent white wine from the Ikaria wine region is called "Monemvasia." Made from the indigenous white grape variety "Begleri," Monemvasia showcases a crisp and refreshing profile. Expect lively notes of citrus fruits like lemon and grapefruit, accompanied by delicate floral aromas and a touch of salinity. The maritime climate and limestone-based soil lend Monemvasia its vibrant acidity and a mineral-driven finish, making it an excellent complement to the island's seafood-based dishes. This Ikarian wine is an excelent compliment for light meals, seafood or even yellow cheese.

Both Pramnios and Monemvasia exemplify the winemaking tradition and distinctive characteristics of the Ikaria wine region, offering wine enthusiasts a chance to savor the island's natural beauty and taste the history of its viticulture in every sip.
