about this subregion

Nestled within the wild and picturesque landscapes of Italy's Abruzzo region, the Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC is a haven for wine lovers seeking a unique and delightful sensory experience. This is an area where rugged mountains kiss the azure Adriatic Sea, and where ancient traditions meet modern viticulture.

The environment plays a pivotal role in the character of the wines from this appellation. The fluctuating coastal breezes, combined with the crisp mountain air, help cultivate grapes that are both ripe and balanced. These natural elements converge to create a unique microclimate, ensuring wines with complexity, depth, and a distinctive mineral streak.

The star of the Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC is undoubtedly the Montepulciano grape, which is prevalent in the region's vineyards. This indigenous variety is celebrated for its robust flavors and ability to produce wines that resonate deeply with the terroir. Alongside Montepulciano, Sangiovese plays a supporting role, bringing its own set of characteristics that harmoniously meld with the former, enhancing the wine's structure and aroma.

The resulting Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo wines boast a captivating cherry-red hue, reminiscent of the cherry ("cerasuolo" in Italian) nuances for which it is named. On the palate, expect a harmonious blend of red fruit flavors, complemented by subtle floral notes and a refreshing acidity.

In every sip of Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo, one can taste the passion of the winemakers, the spirit of the land, and the legacy of the region. It's a liquid testament to the magic that occurs when nature, tradition, and human intervention come together in perfect harmony.

The Cerasuolo d’ Abruzzo DOC covers the same area as the DOC Abruzzo, and is located in the Abruzzo wine region. It includes the coastal and mountainous strip of Abruzzo, while in the centre, it expands inland and includes the Alto Tirino plateau to the north, the Subequana Valley to the northwest, the Peligna Valley to the south and the Roveto Valley to the southwest.

Due to its location, the Cerasuolo d’ Abruzzo DOC has the same climatic conditions as the Abruzzo DOC (Mediterranean climate in the coastal area and continental climate in the inland regions).

Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC thrives in the region's diverse soils. Predominantly clay and limestone, these well-draining terrains provide a foundation for the vibrant rosé's character. The soils contribute to the wine's distinct personality, enhancing its balance of fruitiness and minerality, and adding to the terroir-driven charm of this delightful Abruzzo rosé.
