about this subregion

In the enchanting Valcalepio DOC, two exceptional wines take center stage – the red and white wines, each crafted with precision and a distinct grape composition.

For the red wines, a harmonious blend of 40% to 75% Merlot and 25% to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon captures the essence of the region's winemaking prowess. The Merlot contributes its soft, approachable character, bestowing the wines with ripe berry flavors and a velvety texture. The Cabernet Sauvignon complements with its bold structure, adding notes of black currants and spices. Together, these grapes form a captivating symphony of flavors, culminating in well-balanced and full-bodied red wines, perfect for pairing with hearty Italian dishes, grilled meats, and aged cheeses.

Meanwhile, the white wines of Valcalepio enchant with their delightful blend of 55% to 80% Chardonnay and/or Pinot Bianco, intertwined with 20% to 45% Pinot Grigio. The Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco offer a bright and luscious fruit profile, showcasing flavors of apple, pear, and citrus, while the Pinot Grigio adds a refreshing crispness and hints of tropical fruit. These white wines enthrall with their elegance and versatility, pairing effortlessly with seafood, salads, and light pasta dishes, while also shining on their own as a delightful aperitif.
