Wines under this appellation must be made from at least 90% Grignolino grapes and up to 10% of the Freisa variety. Quality and authenticity are rigorously maintained by the Consorzio Colline del Monferrato Casalese, the association responsible for ensuring the high standards of wines produced under this designation.

In this region, the climate can be classified as humid subtropical. However, the proximity to the Alps and the sea helps moderate temperatures so that winters are not so cold.
