about this subregion

Nestled within the magnificent backdrop of the Italian Alps, Morgex-La Salle DOC stands as a testament to the human spirit's determination to cultivate the improbable. This high-altitude wine region, situated in the Aosta Valley, is among the highest vineyards in Europe. The elevation, combined with a unique Alpine climate, offers a viticulture setting unlike any other.

The terrain is characterized by rocky, mineral-rich soils which, when paired with cool mountain air and ample sunshine, provide an exceptional terroir for grape cultivation. This pristine environment means that the vines benefit from a prolonged growing season, allowing grapes to mature slowly, concentrating their flavors while maintaining a fresh acidity.

Among the white grape varieties planted here, the undisputed king is Prie Blanc. This indigenous variety, which has found its true home in Morgex-La Salle, is resilient enough to thrive in the challenging conditions and cold temperatures. Wines made from Prie Blanc are known for their light, crisp nature, and offer delicate floral aromas accompanied by notes of green apple and citrus. It's a wine that beautifully mirrors its environment, capturing the freshness of the Alpine air and the minerality of its mountainous terroir.

Morgex-La Salle DOC exemplifies the magic that can occur when nature's challenges are met with human innovation, resulting in wines that are as intriguing as they are delightful.

Discover Terroir

Morgex et de la Salle is the northernmost region of the Aosta Valley, located in the shadow of Mont Blanc, near the northwestern Italian border. It covers the south-facing slopes of the Dora river up to the municipalities of Morgex and Salle.  In this region, the Consorzio di Tutela Vini Valle d'Aosta is key to elevate the quality of the wines under this appelation.

In this region, the climate is markedly continental. This means there are large variations in temperature between seasons and day and night. The thermal variations within the same day help the grapes to reach the ideal point of ripeness.

Soils in this region are composed mainly of sand and gravel. This soil serves a dual function: on the one hand, it allows better heat storage, which is key, especially for the cold nights of the region, while on the other hand, it prevents phylloxera from seriously affecting the vineyards.
