about this subregion

Scavigna DOC, nestled in the southern regions of Italy, is a testament to the harmonious blend of nature's bounty and winemaking legacy. This designation of controlled origin captures the heart of a unique wine-producing region, where the intricate dance between soil, climate, and vine offers a unique palate of flavors.

The environment of Scavigna is its essence. Rolling hills coupled with a temperate Mediterranean climate ensure that every grape imbibes the warmth of the sun, the whisper of the breezes, and the richness of the soils. Periodic rainfall, a gentle sea influence, and significant diurnal temperature variations are among the environmental elements that make this DOC an epitome of balanced viticulture.

While a medley of grape varieties finds its home in Scavigna, two stand out for their significant presence. Aglianico, a red grape variety, is deeply embedded in the region's vinicultural narrative. Known for its thick-skinned nature, this grape imparts rich, bold flavors, often resonating with notes of berries, tobacco, and sometimes even leather. Its resulting wines often carry a tannic backbone, promising excellent aging potential.

On the other hand, Gewürztraminer, the predominant white grape variety, offers a contrasting tale. This aromatic grape teases the senses with lychee, rose petals, and sometimes a hint of spice. Its wines are often characterized by a lively acidity, making them perfect for sipping on a sun-drenched Scavigna afternoon.

Together, the environment of Scavigna and its star grapes, Aglianico and Gewürztraminer, showcase a spectrum of tastes, celebrating the diversity and heritage of this distinguished DOC.
