about this subregion

Tucked away in the northeast corner of Italy is the Friuli Aquileia Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC), a wine region celebrated for its unique terroir and rich history. Encircled by the Alpine foothills to the north and the Adriatic Sea to the south, this region benefits from a harmonious blend of continental and maritime climates. This climatic fusion results in striking diurnal temperature shifts, which, coupled with the area's mineral-rich alluvial soils, lays the foundation for creating wines of pronounced aroma and crisp acidity.

The grape varieties thriving in this favorable environment mirror the area's diverse climatic influences. Among the reds, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Refosco stand out for their adaptability and expression, encapsulating the intensity and character of Friuli Aquileia's terroir.

Equally captivating are the white varieties, showcasing a wide spectrum of flavors and aromatic profiles. Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio are, perhaps, the most universally recognized, but it's the regional specialties like Friulano and Verduzzo that truly capture the essence of the land. The aromatic intensity of Gewürztraminer and the crisp notes of Müller-Thurgau and Riesling further complement the rich tapestry of white wines. Malvasia and Sauvignon Blanc also find their niche here, weaving their individual threads into this intricate viticultural fabric.

In essence, the Friuli Aquileia DOC is a testament to the harmony of nature and human endeavor, where history and terroir come together to produce wines of unparalleled elegance and character.

The Friuli Aquileia DOC is located in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia wine region. It covers the Aquileia commune and other 16 communes of the province of Udine.

This region has a maritime climate, windier in summer than in winter. In addition, the region has a good thermal amplitude, which gives the wines more intense and elegant aromas.

This DOC has soils that alternate between gravelly veins, yellowish loams and dark clays mixed with sand. For this reason, they are very suitable for growing vines.

Nestled within the embrace of the Friuli Aquileia DOC wine region, a quartet of wines beckons, each a testament to the land's bounty and the winemaker's craft: Bianco, Rosso, Rosato, and Spumante.

Bianco, a symphony of white varietals, finds its heart in Friulano. Complemented by other authorized white grapes, it reveals a captivating medley of flavors. With every sip, Friulano lends its distinctive character, weaving delicate floral notes and ripe orchard fruit into a harmonious blend that captures the essence of Friuli Aquileia.

Rosso, a ruby elixir, pays homage to the region's artistry. Born from Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso as its foundation, it draws upon a chorus of other authorized white grapes, crafting a red blend that harmonizes tradition with innovation. The result is a wine of depth and complexity, where red fruit and subtle spices create an enchanting symphony on the palate.

Rosato, a rosé of grace and elegance, captures the essence of Friulano with finesse. The minimum 50% Friulano lends its character to the blend, accompanied by other authorized white grapes. The result is a delicate ballet of flavors, a pale pink hue that whispers of strawberries and summer blooms, inviting you to savor each moment.

Spumante, a sparkling jewel, marries the essence of Friulano with effervescence. As the only grape of the varietal, Chardonnay takes center stage. The result is a celebration in a glass, where bubbles dance and citrus notes twirl, creating a symphony of refreshment.

In the Friuli Aquileia DOC, Bianco, Rosso, Rosato, and Spumante embody the spirit of the land and the dedication of those who tend to its vines. Each bottle tells a story, an ode to tradition, innovation, and the timeless beauty of the terroir. With every pour, you embark on a journey through the flavors and fragrances that define Friuli Aquileia's winemaking heritage.
