about this subregion

Nestled in Italy's northeastern regions, the Friuli Isonzo DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) is a wine appellation famed for its rich environmental tapestry that uniquely influences its vinicultural offerings. The terrain, benefitting from the gentle embrace of the Adriatic Sea and the protective shield of the Alps, creates a climate that effortlessly blends the Mediterranean warmth with alpine coolness. This harmony allows for extended ripening periods, ensuring grapes of profound flavor and character.

The varietal diversity in Friuli Isonzo is a testament to its versatile environment. Among the red grape varieties, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon are celebrated for their structured elegance, while Merlot brings lusciousness to the palette. Schioppettino and Refosco resonate with historic ties, offering wines of depth and complexity. Franconia and Pignolo stand as local treasures, with the aromatic Moscato Rosa and the cherry-noted Pinot Nero adding to the region's red wine tapestry.

White grapes flourish under the Friuli Isonzo sun, with Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio emerging as global favorites. Native varieties like Friulano echo the region's heritage, and aromatic varieties such as Gewürztraminer and Malvasia unfurl their fragrances here. The zesty Riesling, refreshing Sauvignon Blanc, and the sweet symphony of Verduzzo and Moscato showcase the vast spectrum of whites. Last, but not least, Welschriesling caps the list with its lively acidity and minerality.

In essence, Friuli Isonzo DOC stands as a testament to how nature and nurture, in a harmonious dance, can lead to wines that are both profound and poetic.

Discover Terroir

The Friuli Isonzo DOC is located in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia wine region, along the Isonzo River, southwest of Collio.

This region has a maritime climate with a good amount of rainfall. In addition, during the day, it receives warm winds from the Adriatic Sea, while at night, it receives cool winds from the north. This produces a thermal variation between day and night, allowing high-quality wines to be produced.

There are two types of soils in the region:

On the one hand, on the left bank of the river, soils rich in clay and poor in limestone predominate.

On the other hand, the right bank of the river is dominated by soils rich in limestone, stratified with white gravel.
