about this subregion

Nestled in the northernmost reaches of Italy lies the pristine wine region of Alto Adige, designated as DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata). This unique region, cradled between the soaring Alpine peaks and kissed by Mediterranean breezes, gifts the world with wines that resonate the rhythm of nature and a tapestry of traditions.

The environment of Alto Adige is truly a testament to the synergy between earth and climate. Deep valleys carved by ancient glaciers provide a fascinating terrain, while the interplay of Alpine coolness and Mediterranean warmth bestows a distinct character to the grapes grown here. This melding of climates, combined with the rich mineral soils, translates into wines that are both aromatic and intensely flavored, capturing the very essence of the terroir.

Taking center stage in this vinous ensemble are the grape varieties that have found their perfect home in Alto Adige. When it comes to reds, the region boasts an array of vibrant options. Lagrein, with its deep hues and velvety texture, reflects the heart of Alto Adige, while Schiava offers a lighter, more delicate touch. International stars like Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot thrive alongside the likes of Moscato Rosa, Malvasia Nera, and Pinot Nero, adding depth and variety to the region's red wine offerings.

On the white wine front, Alto Adige dazzles with a broad palette. The ethereal aromatics of Gewürztraminer, native to the region, enchant the senses. Meanwhile, Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, and Pinot Grigio showcase the region's ability to produce crisp, refreshing whites with impeccable structure. Add to the mix aromatic gems like Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc, and it's clear that Alto Adige is a treasure trove for white wine aficionados.

In every bottle of Alto Adige DOC, one can sense the passion of its people, the poetry of its landscapes, and the perfection of its grape varieties. It's not just a wine; it's a journey into a world where nature and tradition harmoniously intertwine.

The Alto Adige DOC is located near the Southern Calcareous Alps, in the Trentino-Alto Adige wine region. The region is bordered to the east by Veneto, to the west by Lombardy and to the north by the Tyrol region of Austria. The Alto Adige DOC works closely with the Consorzio Vini Alto Adige to improve the quality of its wines.

The region's climate is characterized by an alpine climate in the areas closest to the Alps, while in the areas farther away, the climate is rather Mediterranean. In addition, the Alps and the lakes of Garda and the Mediterranean help moderate temperatures.

On the other hand, the soils in the areas closest to the Dolomites are calcareous, while in the more distant areas, they are composed of volcanic porphyry and moraines.
