about this subregion

Nestled amidst the scenic landscapes of northern Italy, Lago di Caldaro DOC is a testament to the harmonious union of nature and viticulture. This captivating wine region, known in German as "Kalterersee", is situated around the shimmering Lake Caldaro. The lake itself, with its temperate microclimate, serves as a gentle guardian for the vineyards that spread out in its embrace. The breezes dancing off the lake's surface modulate temperatures, ensuring the grapes achieve optimal maturity.

The terroir of Lago di Caldaro is a tale of alpine soils meeting Mediterranean warmth, creating a unique backdrop where vines thrive and produce wines of remarkable character. Amidst this environment, the star of the region undoubtedly shines – the Schiava grape. With its deep-rooted history in the region, Schiava paints the hillsides with hues of red and plays a pivotal role in the region's wine legacy.

Schiava wines from Lago di Caldaro are celebrated for their light-to-medium body, crisp red fruit flavors, and a distinct almondy finish. They are wines that echo the lake's serenity and the mountains' grandeur, culminating in a sensory experience that is pure, refreshing, and unmistakably Lago di Caldaro.

Discover Terroir

The DOC Lago di Caldaro, located in the Trentino-Alto Adige wine region, covers the vineyards of the area called Dell'Oltradige, which extends between Bolzano and Termeno to the west of the Adige valley. The wines of this DOC are mainly made from the Schiava grape variety. The Lago di Caldaro DOC works closely with the Consorzio Vini Alto Adige to improve the quality of its wines.

The climate of the region is rather mountainous. For this reason, winters are usually cold and snowy in the vineyards, while summers are hot.

Mountains dominate the topography of the region. In addition, the soils are composed of gravel, so the vines must struggle to access the water.
