about this subregion

Tucked away in the scenic vistas of Tuscany, Italy, lies a wine-producing region renowned for its dedication to tradition and quality: Montalcino. While many wine enthusiasts are familiar with the area due to its legendary Brunello di Montalcino, it's the younger sibling, Rosso di Montalcino DOC, that often captures the imagination and palates of those seeking a vibrant expression of the region.

Montalcino is graced with a unique environment that serves as an ideal terroir for viticulture. Situated at a significant elevation, its vineyards benefit from cooler temperatures, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. This, combined with the region's marly and limestone-rich soils, imparts the wines with a characteristic minerality and depth of flavor.

Central to the success of Rosso di Montalcino is the Sangiovese grape variety. As the most planted red grape in Montalcino, Sangiovese is known for its ruby red hue, inviting aromas of red fruits, florals, and earthy undertones. In Rosso di Montalcino DOC, this grape is celebrated in its youthful vibrancy. Unlike its elder counterpart, Brunello, which requires a more extended aging process, Rosso di Montalcino offers a fresher, more immediate expression of the grape, making it an excellent introduction to the wines of the region.

In essence, Rosso di Montalcino DOC is a testament to the harmony between grape variety and environment. It showcases the dynamic relationship between Sangiovese and the rich terroir of Montalcino, delivering a wine experience that is both authentic and evocative.
