The "Ștefan Vodă" Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) region boasts a regal heritage steeped in history and tradition, making it a place of undeniable charm that houses a true fountainhead of the finest wines.
This region derives its name from none other than Ștefan cel Mare, or STEFAN THE GREAT, a formidable Ruler and Warrior of Moldova who held the longest reign in the medieval era of the Romanian Countries, reigning from 1457 to 1504. During his illustrious rule, STEFAN THE GREAT not only left an indelible mark on history but also played a pivotal role in the promotion of wine production and consumption.
One of his notable contributions was the establishment of the esteemed position of the cup-bearer at the royal court. The cup-bearer was entrusted with overseeing the vineyards and vintners to ensure the crafting of top-quality wines. More than a mere title, the cup-bearer held the solemn responsibility of safeguarding the best wines for royal feasts. Their duties even extended to the critical task of tasting the wine before it graced the King's table, ensuring it remained untainted by poison.
In Moldova, STEPHEN THE GREAT is hailed as the founding figure behind both public and private vineyards and cellars, as attested by acad. G. Constantinescu and prof.inv. Dr. Milu Oșlobeanu in their work, "Stefan cel Mare, Ctitorul podgoriilor din Moldova" (Stephen the Great, the founder of vineyards in Moldova).
The geographical region designated for the production of wines carrying the prestigious Ștefan Vodă Protected Geographical Indication is delineated in accordance with the Order of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry No. 105 of June 10, 2011, encompassing approximately 10 thousand hectares of vineyards.
This PGI earned national protection recognition on February 7, 2012, courtesy of an association of legal entities known as the Association of Ștefan Vodă PGI Wine Producers, and it proudly belongs to all the producers within the Association. Moreover, since October 18, 2016, it has garnered recognition at the European Union level, endorsed by all 28 EU member countries under the Association Agreement.
