about this subregion

Nestled in the heart of Italy's picturesque Piedmont region, the Sizzano sub-region is an emblematic testament to the intricate relationship between land, climate, and viticulture. Dominated by undulating hills and verdant landscapes, Sizzano offers an environment that has been revered for its wine-producing potential. Surrounding this area are the equally esteemed Ghemme, Fara, and Colline Novaresi DOCs, each sharing borders with Sizzano, together forming a tapestry of prestigious wine regions that highlight the diversity and richness of Piedmont's viticultural heritage. The region's unique terroir is characterized by its favorable microclimate and rich soils.

Sizzano's true essence, however, can be attributed to its venerable grape varieties. The most predominant red grape variety here is Nebbiolo, a noble grape known for its rich tannic structure, aromatic complexities, and its ability to produce wines that age gracefully. When wines of Sizzano are mentioned, it's often the character of Nebbiolo that first springs to mind, renowned for its full-bodied profile and notes of rose, cherry, and sometimes even tar.But the essence of Sizzano does not end with Nebbiolo. Uva Rara and Vespolina grapes also find their sanctuary in the region. Uva Rara contributes to the wine's fruity notes and softens the robust tannins of Nebbiolo, while Vespolina, often blended with Nebbiolo, adds a spicy touch, further enhancing the wine's complexity and depth.

The Sizzano DOC, located in the Piedmont wine region, is 22 kilometres from Novara along the road to Valsesia, at the base of twelve hills that slope down to the Sesia River. The Consorzio di Tutela Nebbioli Alto Piemonte plays a vital role in safeguarding and promoting the quality and heritage of the Sizzano DOC wines.

Sizzano experiences hot summers and chilly winters. The average temperature ranges from -3 to 28 °C throughout the year, rarely falling below -8 °C or rising over 31 °C.

On the eastern side of the Sesia Valley, a long moraine runs on a north-south axis that divides a primarily clayey plateau into two hilly strips,  where Sizzano viticulture is practiced. The western slopes that drop to the valley floor have deeper, clayey soils than the eastern slopes, which are more rocky and loose.
