about this subregion

Umbria, often referred to as the "Green Heart of Italy," is a verdant region nestled in the central part of the country. One of its most precious jewels is the Montefalco Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC), a distinguished wine-producing zone renowned for its vibrant vinos and distinctive terroir.

The environment of Montefalco is an intricate tapestry of rolling hills, fertile valleys, and a climate marked by hot summers and mild winters. This natural harmony provides the ideal conditions for vineyards to thrive, allowing the grapes to achieve optimal ripeness while retaining their intrinsic acidity and aromatic profile. The region's clayey and calcareous soil, infused with marine sediments, further accentuates the uniqueness of its wines, lending them both structure and elegance.

Sagrantino stands as the kingpin among the red grape varieties in Montefalco. A native to the region, this grape is celebrated for producing wines of profound depth, character, and aging potential. Montefalco Sagrantino, in particular, is often lauded for its robust flavors, structured tannins, and an invitingly rich hue.

On the white wine spectrum, Grechetto and Trebbiano shine brightly. Grechetto is beloved for its fresh, fruity nuances and almond aftertaste, while Trebbiano, a classic Italian variety, lends a delicate floral note and crisp acidity to the wines.

In essence, Montefalco DOC is a testament to Umbria's deep-rooted viticultural legacy, offering wines that are as captivating in taste as they are reflective of their enchanting origin.

Montefalco DOC is renowned for producing exceptional Bianco and Rosso wines, each boasting a unique character that reflects the region's rich terroir and winemaking traditions.

The Montefalco DOC Bianco is a harmonious blend that captures the essence of the land. At its core, a minimum of 50% Trebbiano Spoletino, an indigenous white grape variety, intertwines with other authorized white grapes to craft a symphony of flavors. Trebbiano Spoletino lends its elegant notes, infusing the wine with a delicate floral aroma and a refreshing citrusy zing. The other white grape varieties contribute their own distinct nuances, weaving a tapestry of aromatics and flavors that dance across the palate. The Bianco embodies the essence of Montefalco, offering a crisp and vibrant experience that perfectly complements the region's culinary delights.

On the other hand, Montefalco DOC Rosso is a testament to the artistry of blending, where Sangiovese takes center stage, supported by the bold presence of Sagrantino and a carefully curated selection of other authorized red grapes. With a foundation of 60-80% Sangiovese, the wine showcases the hallmark characteristics of this esteemed grape – a medley of red berries, subtle spices, and a captivating earthiness. The addition of 10-25% Sagrantino introduces a rich complexity, imparting intense tannins and a dark, alluring fruitiness that evolves gracefully over time. The final touch, a maximum of 30% other authorized red grapes, adds depth and layers of flavor. The Montefalco DOC Rosso is a masterful composition that exemplifies the terroir's influence, offering a wine of remarkable structure and character, destined to mature beautifully in the cellar.

In the heart of Montefalco, these Bianco and Rosso wines are a tribute to the region's dedication to producing wines that mirror its heritage and natural splendor. With every sip, one can savor the commitment of generations of winemakers who have perfected the art of blending and crafted wines that encapsulate the soul of Montefalco.
